Mayan Hand Carved Scull

Posted by on Oct 1, 2014 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Domingo Juan Canil, one of the Guatemala Mayan’s from the province of Quiche in Guatemala, is one of the artists who carved the many beautiful skulls we have on display at Art Presence Art Center. He learned to carve from his father at a young age and chose muted colors to paint his art.
These carved masks can be traced back to Pre-Classic period (2000 BC-250 AD). The folklore of masks reaches one of its highest forms in Guatemala, a country known for its great pre-Columbian culture. The indigenous populations continue to preserve their culture in spite of Western influences in the country.Skull Mask
