Calls to Artists

Art Presence Art Center calls to artists for one open show each year. The Angels Show, curated and produced in conjunction with Southern Oregon Artists Resource, offers a wide range of artistic interpretations of angels as a Guest Exhibit on the back wall of the gallery in December.

Below you will find an entry form with all the rules, dates, and details. You can download and complete this form at any time before the stated deadline. It’s also helpful if you let us know about your intention to enter the Angels Show in advance. Send images of your angels (completed or in-progress) along with the details shown on the form to Anne Brooke, whose email address is on the form. This will have the added benefit of providing us with a small pool of angel images to use for promoting the show and your individual entries. We’re also including calls to artists from previous years to give first-time participants an idea of what to expect.

From time to time, we also share calls to artists from other organizations here as a courtesy to our gallery friends and artist members. Please check back from time to time and see who’s calling for your art!

Angels Show History

The Angels Show had its inaugural exhibition at the GoodBean Cafe on Oregon Street in 2013. Co-Owner Mary Kell longed to be surrounded with angels that holiday season, and she asked Hannah West, curator of the GoodBean’s art displays at the time, to put together a show of angels for the shop. Despite the last minute calls to artists, the show was a success for artists and patrons alike. Therefore, they continued the show each year until 2018, when the GoodBean decided to go with a permanent installation of art by David Gibb. Despite this change, Mary felt strongly that the Angels Show should continue every holiday season in Jacksonville. By this time, Hannah was serving on the Board of Art Presence, and she brought the idea to the Director, Anne Brooke. Anne loved the idea and the angels found a new home.

We have had the distinct pleasure of hanging angels created in just about any medium and style you can think of. The move to Art Presence opened the door to displaying 3D works, so we started to see more sculpture, assemblage, and special creations such as hand crafted dolls.

Our focus is on the artist’s interpretation of the angel concept. We like to see the angels that live in the imagination of artists and every one of our calls to artists has yielded incredibly creative work. Earth angels, guardian angels, peace angels, angels of hope, rescue angels, everyday angels, angels working in the midst of chaos, exhausted angels, classical, traditional, abstract, painted, sculpted, assembled, digitally created, and drawn, these and more spring forth from their inexhaustible imaginations with color, movement, emotional depth, and message. Here are some of the amazing interpretations of angels we have seen in previous Angels Shows.
