July 4 – 28: “Luminosity” Member Exhibition

A celebration of summer, this month’s theme centers on the subject of light with paintings reflecting the luminous quality of the sun and the outdoor activities we enjoy in its brightness, envisioning bright colors, farmers markets, summer vacations and time in the sun.

In the front gallery we present a solo exhibit of oil paintings by Veronica Thomas. Veronica strives to convey strength and power through her brushstrokes, conveying a visual message of her own feelings and the beauty she observes in everyday things.

The gallery will be open from 11am-3pm on the Fourth of July. The City of Jacksonville is hosting a community picnic to celebrate the holiday on the grounds of the historic Courthouse – on the opposite end of the property where our gallery is located – and if you’re attending the picnic, we hope you will stop in to see the luminous works of our artist members!

“Luminosity” Art Talk: July 13, 1-2pm

July 13, 1-2pm at Art Presence Art Center in Jacksonville, activist/artist Catie Faryl will talk about “luminosity” in light  of the need for transparency and truth and what art and satire can reveal.

The aspect of creating art as political and social satire is one of many paths to truth since it can reveal hidden or unacknowledged aspects of society and what is communicated or not, as well as what we need to consider and change.  Art can also serve as a relief to the stress of political and economic anxieties by reducing the grandiosity of our problems and looking at things with fresh eyes and light.

Two of the paintings Catie will exhibit in the July “Luminosity” show at Art Presence are from her short written piece – “A Trip to Cynbalta: A Story of Community.” After a presentation of this body of work, she will facilitate a group discussion about our community cultures and the limitations of mainstream media, with particular focus on reclaiming the leadership voices for artists and their unique views – using “luminosity” as a metaphor for enhanced truth.

Please save the date: July 13, 2013 from 1-2pm.

FREE & Open to the public! Learn more about Catie’s work at catiefaryl.net.
