Maybe a Valentine’s present for yourself or a loved one? Anxious to add new work to your collection or decorate for a special occasion? You can also take your art finds home when you purchase them. Please note that the show opens Friday, January 4, at 11 am and the gallery is open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 am – 5 pm.

Haiku

Haiku by Steve Ostrander, Calligrapher's Guild member

This year the Calligraphers’ Guild presents beautifully rendered haiku. Haiku is a Japanese poem of seventeen syllables, in three lines of five, seven, and five. Moreover, traditional Haiku must evoke images of the natural world.

You can identify Haiku by looking for these three qualities:

  • First, the essence of haiku is “cutting” (kiru).[1] This is often represented by the juxtaposition of two images or ideas and a kireji (“cutting word”) between them,[2] a kind of verbal punctuation mark which signals the moment of separation and colors the manner in which the juxtaposed elements are related.
  • Next, traditional haiku often consist of 17 on (also known as morae though often loosely translated as “syllables”), in three phrases of 5, 7, and 5 on, respectively.[3] However, some authors are critical of the distribution of syllables, such as Vicente Haya or Jaime Lorente.[4]
  • Finally, a kigo (seasonal reference), usually drawn from a saijiki, an extensive but defined list of such terms.

Modern Japanese haiku (現代俳句 gendai-haiku) are increasingly unlikely to follow the tradition of 17 on or to take nature as their subject. Importantly, the use of juxtaposition continues to be honored in both traditional and modern haiku.[5] There is a common, although relatively recent, perception that the images juxtaposed must be directly observed everyday objects or occurrences.[6]

Japanese traditionally print haiku in a single vertical line. However, haiku in English often appear in three lines to parallel the three phrases of Japanese haiku.

Add to your art collection for less or buy the art you love without paying for a frame you intend to replace! Naked Art, a collection of unframed fine art by Art Presence members, lets you take home your naked art finds right away. The bonus for collectors is that new works will replace those that have sold, so there will be more art to consider as it is added throughout the show.

Art Presence Art Center first presented our Naked Art: No Mats, No Frames, Great Deals exhibition in February 2015, and it was such a success we decided to bring it back for 2016. This year’s show will extend for two months, giving you more time to make your decisions. Unlike most art shows where buyers must wait for the show’s end to take their purchases home, Naked Art purchases can be taken home immediately and framed to your own taste and interior decor needs.

Acrylic painting by Catherine Anderson

7″ x 5″ acrylic painting by Catherine Anderson

Art Presence Art Center is delighted to welcome new member Catherine Anderson, AWS! A signature member of the American Watercolor Society, Anderson is known for her delicate portrayals of misty landscapes and foggy seascapes, with recognition for her autumn grapevines and black and white cows. She moved to Jacksonville in mid-2015, so we welcome her as a neighbor as well as a new member of Art Presence. Catherine also paints in acrylic with a technique and a style all her own. She participates in the Naked Art show with 7 x 5 impressionist landscapes in acrylic on paper. Catherine’s website is being renovated at the moment, but there are galleries in place with a significant amount of her watercolor paintings available to view online! Visit www.catherineanderson.net to see more of her artwork now, and check in again soon for more information about this nationally respected watercolorist!

“Wooden Bird,” watercolor by Anne Brooke

Our founder, Anne Brooke, has a selection of her watercolor paintings on display. Anne is a well respected artist and art instructor. Her use of color and uplifting style evoke a sense of seeing familiar things through a lens that casts a delicate prism of light over her subjects.

"Place de Vosges," watercolor and ink by Anna Elkins

“Place de Vosges,” watercolor and ink by Anna Elkins

Also participating in Naked Art is Anna Elkins with 5 x 7 watercolor and ink sketches from her recent travels in Morocco, Portugal, and Paris.

Our retrospective of the late Elaine Witteveen‘s work continues in conjunction with Naked Art with unframed original watercolor paintings by this highly esteemed artist.

We have many more artist members participating in the show, but not many images. Come to the Art Presence Art Center gallery to see all the original naked art in this exhibition!
